Drying up for many through the afternoon

Issued: 0530hrs Friday 7th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

A wet, windy and mild start to the day for most. Drying up for many later but staying windy.

Good morning,

It will be a mild, cloudy, wet and rather windy start to the day across most of the UK and Ireland today. Low pressure has been moving in to the north of us overnight and extends fronts across the British Isles. It will stay wet for the southeast of England and northwest of Scotland through most of the morning but elsewhere it should dry up and some bright spells could develop. There will be gale to severe gale force winds for western parts of Ireland and Scotland; near gale force winds for western Wales and England.

This afternoon sees the main band of rain clear to the east of England and some more sunny spells developing. Rain will persist for northwestern Scotland while drizzle will develop over some western coasts. Winds will strengthen over western parts of Wales and England reaching gale force while winds over Ireland and Scotland will maintain at gale to severe gale force. Gusts in excess of 60mph are possible over much of Scotland and northern England and in coastal parts of Ireland and Wales. Temperature highs of 6 or 7C for much of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and northern England; 9 or 10C is possible in the southeast.

It will stay very windy through Friday evening and into the night. Rain will ease over northwestern Scotland though will persist and spread eastward through the evening.

Claire
