Rain, sleet and snow

Issued: 0530hrs Wednesday 30th December 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

An area of low pressure is expected to move over Ireland and into the southwest of the UK today bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow to these areas. A brighter day for Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as Ireland later, though wintry showers affect exposed coasts and hills. Staying cold.

Good Morning,

A cold start this morning for most with a widespread frost and ice patches affecting many areas. Snow showers this morning affecting northern and western parts of Scotland while an area of low pressure moves in across southwest Ireland bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow to much of Ireland with the exception of the far northeast. Through the morning the low spreads into the southwest of the UK bringing rain into parts of Wales and the southwest initially.

Low pressure moves eastward through the afternoon bringing a wintry mix of precipitation across Wales and southern parts of England. Meanwhile conditions brighten across Ireland and stay bright across Scotland and Northern Ireland though wintry showers will persist over coastal areas and over higher ground.

Wintry precipitation spreads into southeast England through the evening while a front edges into the far east of northern England and Scotland bringing more persistent rain and sleet here for a time. Clear skies through the evening over much of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland though wintry showers will continue to affect exposed coastal areas.

Have a good day!
