Wet & windy
Drier Christmas

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 19th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Wet and windy weather in the days ahead but then turning drier for Christmas

Unsettled weather continues into the weekend as low pressure brings rain and showers. However, heading into Christmas there are signs of a significant change ahead as high pressure builds. This could bring drier weather through the Christmas period, although an enhanced risk of mist and fog, perhaps with some drizzle. Temperatures close to normal for the time of year.

Saturday 22/12/18
Low pressure remains to the north of Scotland through Saturday. This brings showers into Scotland, some heavy in the north, west and through the central belt. A few showers on western coasts of England and Wales as well as Ireland. Tending to be drier through England, the rest of Wales and much of central and eastern Ireland with some sunny spells here. Highs at 5C in northern Scotland, 9C in southern England.

Sunday 23/12/18
Low pressure persists over the UK and Ireland on Sunday. This brings heavy periods of rain, most over the south of the UK and Ireland. Scotland probably having less rain, although there will be some in the west. Highs at 5C in northern Scotland, 10C in southern England.

Christmas Eve
A cooler day seems likely for Christmas Eve. Rain may clear eastern areas of the country ahead of a cooler northwest flow developing. This will bring some bright or sunny spells, but the threat of some showers on coasts. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Christmas Day
Indications are that higher pressure builds on Christmas Day. This may allow for an early inland forst as well as some mist and fog patches. These clear slowly leaving a dry day with broken cloud and some bright or sunny spells. Temperatures around 4 to 8C.

Boxing Day
Pressure may well stay high through Boxing Day. There may be a fair amount of cloud together with cloud and outbreaks of drizzle. A few bright spells. Highs at 3 to 9C.

Thursday 27/12/18
Pressure is likely to be staying high through Wednesday. There will be a fair amount of cloud. A risk of some drizzle with mist and murk too. Highs at 4 to 9C.
