Rain in the north
Colder later

Issued: 1000 Friday 19th October 2018
Duty forecaster: David Hulse

Mainly settled in the south and east but with spells of rain or drizzle for northwestern areas.

The main focus on rain is across the north and west with brighter skies for the east and south of the British Isles, albeit with some weekend fog. Mild at first in the south and feeling quite pleasant in any sunshine but then turning cooler generally early next week and with an indication of a colder snap towards the end of next week.

Monday 22/10/18
A ridge of high pressure over much of the British Isles, slipping south. Frontal troughs slow-moving near to Northern Scotland. Cloudy across the north and northwest of Scotland with spells of rain or drizzle but dry and bright for remaining areas with some sunshine, although the northwest will tend to be cloudier. A cool west to northwesterly breeze with strong winds in the north. Cooler generally, highs 10 to 13C.

Tuesday 23/10/18
High pressure persists to the west of Ireland, with a slow-moving frontal trough close to Northeast Scotland. Rain or drizzle at times for the north and northwest of Scotland. Remaining areas mostly dry with some sunshine, just the slight risk of an isolated light shower but cloudier again in the northwest. Still a cool west to northwesterly breeze, strong in the north. Highs 11 to 15C.

Wednesday 24/10/18
A slow-moving high to the west of Ireland, with a weak frontal trough near to Northeast Britain. Light and patchy rain or drizzle around the north and west of Scotland. Dry elsewhere, the best of any sunshine in the south and east, cloudier in the northwest. Highs 12 to 15C, locally 17C in the east and southeast.

Thursday 25/10/18
High pressure near to Western Ireland declines, allowing a cold front to move southeast. Patchy light rain or drizzle in the north and west of Scotland, becoming more persistent for a time and extending into Northern Ireland. Some brightness but becoming cloudier across England and Wales with patchy rain or showers developing. Strong winds in the north. Highs 11 to 15C.

Friday 26/10/18
High pressure to the west of Ireland, with a chilly northerly airstream becoming established. Showers, frequent in the north and around coasts exposed to the brisk north to northwest wind, otherwise mostly dry with spells of sunshine. Highs only 8 to 12C.

Saturday 27/10/18
High pressure to the west of Ireland and low pressure over Scandinavia maintain a northerly airstream. Showers continue to run into Northern Scotland and coasts exposed to the chilly northerly winds, otherwise mostly dry with sunny spells. Highs 8 to 11C.
