Winds easing from Saturday

Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 11th August 2019
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Two separate areas of rain will affect the country today: the first over central and southern Scotland and northern England will be heavier and more persistent; the second is a band of rain sinking southeastward across Wales and England throughout the day. Elsewhere should stay dry with sunny spells developing for some.

Good morning,

We've got two main areas of rain affecting the country first thing this morning: the first is an area of heavy rain over central and southern Scotland; the second is a frontal band of rain extending through northwestern England and Wales. Through the morning the area of rain over central Scotland will spread south into southern Scotland and northern England while the second band of rain will edge southeastward into the Midlands and across southern parts of England. Elsewhere it should stay mostly dry with cloudy skies to the north and west, brighter skies to the southeast.

Through the afternoon heavy rain will continue for the southern half of Scotland and over northern England while the frontal band of rain will continue to edge further towards the southeast. It will continue rather cloudy to the north and west for much of Scotland and across Ireland while it will brighten for Wales and central parts of England with some good spells of sunshine developing. High temperatures will reach just 13 or 14C in Scotland and Northern Ireland, 15 to 17C across northern England, Wales and Ireland and 19 to 22C across central and southern parts of England.

Rain should clear away from southeastern England through the evening leaving a dry end to the day but will persist over the English-Scottish border region through the first part of the night.

Have a good day!
Claire
