A frosty start for many areas. Staying dry across the south and south-east during daylight hours. Variable cloud and some sun. Fronts moving in from the north-west will see thickening cloud, and rain developing for Ireland, then western Scotland by afternoon, falling as snow across the Highlands. Patchy rain will develop for Wales and the south-west. West to southwesterly winds will strengthen, to gale force around western coasts. Temperatures reaching 3 to 5C, locally 8C southwest.

Monday night
A cold front marches swiftly southeastwards overnight, producing a spell of rain for most of Britain, with sudden heavy bursts and squally winds. Snow is likely over higher ground in Scotland, northern England and Wales - the snow falling to lower levels on the back edge of the front as colder air arrives. Later in the night, heavy showers follow into western regions with snow or hail. Ice forming. Temperatures 3 to 5C ahead of the front, but falling to 0C or below behind it.

Tuesday
At dawn, a cold front will be clearing the far south-east of England, where heavy rain soon fades. A cold and showery west to northwesterly airflow affects the country through the day. Clusters of heavy snow and hail showers spreading inland from western coasts of Britain and Ireland on a stiff breeze. Risk of isolated thunder. Local significant accumulations of snow are possible, even at low levels. Some sunshine, best across eastern areas of Scotland and England. Highs 1 to 5C.

Wednesday
Low pressure centred to the north-east is expected to give a cyclonic northerly airflow during midweek. Detail is uncertain, but clusters of snow and hail showers are likely to affect areas in the north and north-west. A few wintry showers possible for south-west England - rain at lower levels. Largely dry for central, south and eastern England, with sunny spells. Expect icy conditions. Highs 0 to 4C.
