Dry and bright conditions to start the day will be replaced by wet and windy weather moving in from the west

Good morning,

A ridge of high pressure has been building from the west overnight giving most of us a dry and bright start to the day. Some light, wintry showers may linger along western coasts but these should ease as the morning goes on. Cloud will build from the west through the morning blanketing much of the island of Ireland by lunchtime.

Through the afternoon cloud will continue to build towards the east while a band of rain will start to move into western parts of Ireland. By late afternoon the rain will have reached most of Ireland and Northern Ireland and will be edging into western Scotland, western Wales and the West Country. The rain will be accompanied by very strong winds reaching gale force or stronger for many western areas. Gusts could reach 70mph through the northern part of the Irish Sea. High temperatures will range from 5 or 6C for most Scottish towns and cities to 10C in the southeast of England.

Through the evening rain and high winds will continue to edge eastwards reaching most of Scotland, northwestern England, Wales and southwest England. The hills of Scotland will likely see more snow. Staying dry but clouding over in the southeast.
