Unsettled conditions

Issued: 0930 Sunday 24th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Temperatures turn milder from mid-week

Colder air affecting the UK and Ireland into the early part of next week with some rain, sleet and snow all likely at times. From mid-week onwards a milder flow moves in accompanied by more unsettled conditions. Expect strengthened winds and more rainfall adding to already saturated ground. Flooding poses a likely risk.

Wednesday 27/01/21
A dry start for many but through the morning cloud thickens in the west and patchy rain, sleet and perhaps snow over higher ground, will push across western and central areas of the UK and Ireland. Rain could be locally heavy across western areas where it will fall on saturated ground so flooding in places once again is a likely risk. Winds strengthen too from the southwest. Staying dry over northeast Scotland. Highs range from 2 to 5C in the north and east, milder to the south and west at 6 to 12C.

Thursday 28/01/21
Low pressure circulates to the west of Scotland on Thursday. A band of rain looks to stall over southern and central Scotland, the northern half of Ireland and northern England bringing locally heavy and persistent rain here. South of this, strong winds drive in heavy, blustery showers from the west. Staying dry but cloudy to the north. Highs at 8 to 13C for most, just 4 to 6C across Scotland.

Friday 29/01/21
Early rain over southern parts of the UK on Friday clears to the east leaving a largely dry and fine day for many. Good spells of sunshine develop over Scotland and northeast England. Cloudier to the southwest with rain arriving into southwest Ireland later. High temperatures at just 2C in northern Scotland, 11C in the Republic of Ireland, but more widely ranging from 5 to 9C.

Saturday 30/01/21
Low pressure moves east across the south of the UK bringing the risk of strong winds, rain, sleet and snow to southern parts of England and Wales. A drier and brighter day elsewhere with a scattering of wintry showers for northern and eastern coasts and hills. Highs at 2 to 5C for many, 8 to 11C across the southwestern half of Ireland and for the far southwest of the UK.

Sunday 31/01/21
A transient ridge of high pressure may bring a dry and fine day to much of the UK with the risk of an early frost as well as mist and fog patches. A cloudier day with frequent and locally heavy outbreaks of rain for Ireland. Highs range from 2 to 7C.

Monday 01/02/21
Low pressure to the west sends bands of rain, sleet and snow across Ireland and into the southwest of the UK. Strong winds here too. Staying drier and brighter to the northeast. Highs range from 3 to 9C.
