Month ahead - January 04, 2018
Valid from 06/01 to 02/02 2018
Valid from 06/01 to 02/02 2018

Issued: Thursday 4th January 2018
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Varying temperatures throughout the month with a battle taking place between mild and cold weather

There's plenty of arguments raging amongst longer range computer models right now. Differing solutions focus on how cold air, currently deepening over Scandinavia influences the situation going forward. Our thoughts remain similar right now in that we believe that cool conditions will fade mid month before returning again later with February showing as being colder.
However, note the uncertainty associated with this forecast which is best described as being low confidence.

*6/1/18 - 12/1/18*
A brief colder spell of weather as higher pressure builds through Scandinavia.
During the week milder air will try to become re-established from the west, and although hit and miss this less chilly air will eventually dominate the weather.

*13/1/18 - 19/1/18*
The battle between cold and warm air continues during this week, pushing backwards and forwards through the UK and Ireland, bringing rain at times.
We still expect a milder westerly flow to be breaking through bringing most rain in the west.

*20/1/18 - 26/1/18*
Pressure may well try to build again during the course of this week, although it may take time before higher pressure becomes established.
Temperatures are likely to be falling during the week with a risk of rain, sleet and snow, mostly in the south.

*27/1/18 - 2/2/18*
It may that a briefer period of more mixed and milder weather develops for a short time.
However, into early February higher pressure may become established again bringing a return to colder conditions into early February.

*3/2/18 to 9/2/18*
Tending to be cool through this week with frosts and much dry weather. Note confidence is low.
