Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

Rain and showers in the short term, especially in the north and west, drier for many through into next week

For the weather for the next few days click here

Sunday 24/9/17
High pressure over Scandinavia on Sunday still, with low pressure to the west. This is going to be bringing a mostly dry day with sunny spells although there could be some low cloud on eastern coasts. A weak front will bring some rain or drizzle to Scotland, Ireland, Wales and W England through the day though. Breezy in the west. Highs at 15C to 22C.

Monday 25/9/17
High pressure stays to the northeast bringing an increasing southeasterly wind. The day should be mostly fair with sunny spells, although rather breezy, especially across eastern areas. A slow moving weather front will, however, bring some patchy rain and drizzle to W Scotland, NW England, Wales and SW England through the day. Highs at 16C to 22C.

Tuesday 26/9/17
Pressure is forecast to build more widely across the British Isles by Tuesday now, but the SE'ly breeze perhaps bringing a few spots of drizzle in the east. Generally the cloud breaks through the day though to give some sunny spells and it will be pleasantly warm, especially inland, but cooler near North Sea coasts. Highs at 14C to 21C.

Wednesday 27/9/17
Lower pressure west of Ireland on Wednesday with high pressure to the east is still set to dominate. Weather fronts may bring some rain into SW England and Wales, with stronger winds and more persistent rain in Ireland and w Scotland, but there continues to be uncertainty over the details at the moment. Drier to the east is still forecast, perhaps with some continued bright or sunny spells. Highs at 14C to 20C.

Thursday 28/9/17
Indications continue to be for a deeper area of low pressure to develop to the west of Ireland by Thursday. Fronts push east taking stronger winds and some rain with it, but uncertainty as to whether rain will reach E England. It is likely that some heavy rain, and strong winds, will develop across Scotland and Ireland in particular as the day progresses. Cooler for most. Highs at 13C to 19C.

Friday 29/9/17
Low pressure is forecast to be dominant to the west or north-west of the British Isles by Friday and maintain a risk of rather wet and windy conditions across more northern and western areas in particular. However, higher pressure is still expected to the east, as a result, some drier and brighter weather may well be maintained across eastern and south-eastern areas of England in particular. Highs 13C to 19C overall.
