Snow showers to east
Milder next week

Issued: 0900 Tuesday 7th February 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Cold days ahead with wintry showers, most in the east but then milder next week

Cold days ahead as high pressure builds to the east. There will be snow flurries and showers affecting eastern coasts and hills, a tendency for these to spread inland during Saturday. After the weekend the winds may change direction slightly, becoming more of a southeasterly and this could allow for milder conditions early next week.

Saturday 11/2/17
The easterly wind persists over the UK on Saturday, with the UK squeezed between high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south. It is going to be another cold day with plenty of cloud. There will be some snow showers on eastern coasts in the morning, these tending to then develop inland as the day progresses. Most will only be light, although there could be an odd heavier one in the east. Drier in much of western Scotland and Ireland as well as the far south of England. Highs at 2 to 4C.

Sunday 12/2/17
High pressure extends from eastern Europe to Scotland on Sunday. The easterly flow persists for all with some cloud and a risk of further drizzle and snow flurries over eastern coasts. Some snow flurries and drizzle in Ireland too, but drier across western Wales and southwest England. Highs at 3 to 5C.

Monday 13/2/17
High pressure remains to the east on Monday. Low pressure is to the west. It is likely to be dry for most with some bright spells here and there. The risk of some rain or drizzle in southern Ireland and southwest England. Breezy here too. Probably feeling less cool than at the weekend. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Tuesday 14/2/17
High pressure east of the UK on Tuesday, low pressure to the west. Milder air starting to return, although this producing low cloud and drizzle across much of England, Wales and Ireland. Drier in Scotland. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Wednesday 15/2/17
High pressure remains to the east on Wednesday. A southeast flow brings some showers across southwest England and Ireland. Further showers affecting the east of Scotland and northeast England. Dry elsewhere although with rather a lot of cloud. Chilly in the east but milder to the west. Highs at 4 to 9C.

Thursday 16/2/17
High pressure stays to the east on Thursday. This is going to be bringing more dry weather to most. Cloud breaking with some sunny spells developing. Drizzle and patchy rain in western Ireland. Tops at 4 to 9C.
