Week ahead - January 19, 2017
Slow changes
Chilly, some frost

Issued: 0930hrs Thursday 19th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Milder in west next week

A rather benign weather pattern continues over the weekend and into next week as high pressure remains close to the British Isles. Cloud will tend to break allowing some sunshine by day, but this brings a risk of more widespread frost overnight. Some rain may push into the west by the middle of next week.

Sunday 22/01/17
High pressure is centred over eastern Europe, whilst a slack pressure regime influences the British Isles, promoting a slack south-easterly flow. Chilly with variable cloud and some sunshine - likely brightest in central England. Frosty in the morning where skies stayed clear overnight. Patchy light rain or drizzle may affect the south-west. Little wind. Just 3 to 5C for most, up to 8C south-west.

Monday 23/01/17
Pressure remains high across the country. Local drizzly rain may affect the south-west, but most places will stay dry. Broken cloud and sunshine. Some fog patches in low lying areas. Light winds for most. A frosty start, and staying chilly during the day, only 3 to 5C, locally cooler should fog linger. Slightly milder around coasts in the south-west.

Tuesday 24/01/17
High pressure toward the east and little change to the pattern. A southerly breeze freshens across Ireland and western Britain. Dry overall, with sunshine for much of England & Wales, although it may be rather hazy, and some fog may linger for some low-lying areas. Thicker cloud in the west. Highs 3 to 8C, mildest west.

Wednesday 25/01/17
Staying cool in the east, but slowly becoming milder from the west as a southerly wind freshens. Dry for many, but patchy rain may develop in the west. Highs 3 to 9C.

Thursday 26/01/17
Outbreaks of rain are likely in the north-west, but very little should reach central & south-eastern Britain. Mild in west, cooler east. Highs 4 to 11C.

Friday 27/01/17
Patchy rain in the north-west continues. Mainly dry in central & south-eastern Britain. Temperatures lifting a little in east, between 5 and 11C.
