Week ahead - January 20, 2017
Dry for many
Some rain in west

Issued: 0930hrs Friday 20th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Chilly east, milder west

Only slow changes to the weather pattern over the week ahead, as high pressure remains close to the British Isles. Many places will stay dry, although rain will try and encroach into the west from time to time. Chilly air will persist in the east of Britain, but milder air will arrive in western areas.

Monday 23/01/17
Pressure remains high across the country and many places will stay dry. Outbreaks of rain or drizzle possible in the south-west. Broken cloud and some sunshine, best toward the north-east. Some freezing fog patches in low lying areas. Light winds for most. A frosty start, and staying chilly during the day, only 3 to 5C, locally cooler should fog linger. Milder around coasts in the south-west, 8 to 10C.

Tuesday 24/01/17
High pressure drifts slowly toward the east, allowing a southerly breeze to freshen across Ireland and western Britain, where cloud will thicken, and there is a risk of patchy rain. Dry for much of Britain, with areas of sunshine for England & Wales, best in the east, although rather hazy. Some fog may linger for some low-lying areas. Starting frosty. Highs 3 to 8C, mildest in south-west.

Wednesday 25/01/17
High pressure to the east continues to block the progress of incoming fronts from the Atlantic. Dry for many, with sunshine for eastern counties. Cloudy in the west, and patchy rain possible around coasts and hills. Staying cool in the east & south-east, but mild in the west, daytime temperatures ranging from 3 to 9C.

Thursday 26/01/17
A southerly breeze affects the British Isles. Rain over Ireland may nudge into western Britain, but much of the country should remain dry and bright. Best sunshine in the east & north, although remaining cool. Dull but mild in the south-west. Temperatures between 5 and 10C.

Friday 27/01/17
A south to south-easterly flow is likely. High pressure stays toward the east of Britain. Some rain toward the south-west, but many places may remain dry. Sunshine toward the north and east. Temperatures lifting a little, highs 6 to 11C.

Saturday 28/01/17
Indications favour winds turning south-westerly. Rain may develop in the north-west as winds freshen. Mainly dry and bright in the south & east. Milder overall, 6 to 12C.
