Cold through the weekend
Snow and ice

Issued: 1000hrs Tuesday 10th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Staying chilly into early next week

Arctic air will spread across the country later this week, and snow showers are likely to cause local disruption to travel. Ice will be a common hazard. Thunder and lightning is possible from the heavier showers. The weekend will stay cold for most, and further snow is possible, although the south-west should turn milder.

Friday 13/01/17
Low pressure over Scandinavia and high pressure to the south-west. A cold day for all regions. Areas of snow showers, most frequent around coasts in the north & west, perhaps also eastern England. Some bands of snow may extend into the Midlands from the north-west. Otherwise, plenty of sunshine, and many inland areas may remain largely dry. A north-westerly breeze will feel very cold. Highs 0 to 4C.

Saturday 14/01/17
A cold north to north-westerly pattern persists into the weekend. Areas of wintry showers, a mix of rain and sleet at low levels, particularly in the west, but mainly snow over the hills toward the north & north-east. Locally showers may merge into frequent rain or snow. Sunny spells away from showers. The fresh breeze may ease in the north. Risk of ice. Temperatures 1 to 5C.

Sunday 15/01/17
Cold air remains in place across the British Isles, whilst fronts moving in from the Atlantic try to introduce milder air and precipitation. A complex mix of rain and snow - the snow most likely toward the north, and over higher ground, but some may fall and lie to lower levels. Temperatures are likely to rise to 7 or 8C in the south-west, but nearer 2 to 4C or below in the north & east.

Monday 16/01/17
High pressure extends across the country, maintaining cold conditions in many areas. Frost and ice likely to start the morning, some places dipping to -5C or below. A few wintry showers around coasts, but much of the country should stay dry and bright. Top temperatures just 2 to 5C, locally milder in far west.

Tuesday 17/01/17
Staying chilly in the south & east, with frosty but bright conditions, only 2 to 5C. Some wintry showers near coasts. Milder toward the far west & north-west, up to 7 to 10C, where some drizzly rain is possible.

Wednesday 18/01/17
A continued battle between mild air over the Atlantic and colder air toward the continent. Much of central Britain may remain rather cold, with frost and fog, whilst the west & north is milder with a little rain. Highs 4 to 10C.
