Cold with some snow at first, then milder to the north before the cold returns later

Cold weather arrives across the country during this week. Unsettled and windy over the next couple of days. Severe gales in eastern areas on Friday with snow showers here. Turning milder over Ireland and Scotland into the later stages of the weekend and the early part of next week. Highs pressure then returns bringing colder weather back from the east next week, although it will be the middle of the week before the chill returns to Scotland.

Sunday 15/1/17
The ridge of high pressure gets squeezed to the south on Sunday. This allows fronts to pass eastwards through Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England bringing rain, drizzle and lots of cloud but also some milder temperatures. Murky too with hill and coastal fog, most in the west. The southern half of England and eastern and southern Wales should be drier with increasing cloud but staying cold. Highs at 3C in southeast England, 9C in Northern Ireland.


Monday 16/1/17
High pressure is to the east of the UK on Monday. A front lies north to south through eastern England, the Midlands and southern England. Here it is going to be cloudy and damp with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, murky too. Drier to the west and north with broken cloud although low cloud and drizzle affecting western coasts and hills. Highs at 3C in southeast England, 9C in Northern Ireland and western Scotland.


Tuesday 17/1/17
High pressure centred over southern England on Tuesday. The remnants of a front across southern Scotland, Ireland and Wales bringing lots of murk, low cloud and drizzle here. Cloud may break to the southeast with a few bright spells here and remaining cold. Drier in the far north of Scotland and western Ireland and milder too. Highs at 2C in southeast England, 9C in western Ireland and western Scotland.


Wednesday 18/1/17
Pressure stays high, centred to the east of the UK. Staying cold over much of England and Wales with bands of mostly light showers passing west. These could fall as sleet and snow, mostly on hills. Drier Scotland and Ireland, milder here too. Highs at 2C in the southeast, 8C in western Scotland and Ireland.


Thursday 19/1/17
High pressure to the east again through Thursday. Dry with sunny spells developing for many, although increased cloud and soe showers in the south and east. Best of the sunshine in the west and north. Cooler for all with highs at 1 to 4C.

Friday 20/1/17
High pressure remains over the UK on Friday. Cold with a strong east wind across England, Wales and Ireland. Some wintry showers affecting the far south. Mostly drier and brighter elsewhere. Highs at 1 to 3C.
