Wet New Year Scotland
Drier to south

Wednesday
A cold front is bringing some cloud through Ireland, Wales, central and southern England this morning. The front has enough about it to produce one or two spots of rain over high ground, but even these will be fading away. A fresh north to northwest wind will be making eastern areas feel much colder and will bring a few showers here. brighter weather in central and western Scotland as well as Northern Ireland and northern England will be slipping southwards through the day. So it becomes a west-east split with the best sunshine in western areas, always the risk of a shower in the east although the wind easing here through the afternoon. Temperatures around 9C in southwest England, just 3C on eastern coasts of Scotland and northeast England with colder air arriving from the north throughout the day.

Wednesday Night
High pressure settles over the UK tonight. This brings clear skies with winds falling light for all. Temperatures will be falling quickly and a sharp frost is going to be forming. Lows around -1C in Ireland, but down to -6C in some rural parts of the UK.

Thursday
High pressure is over the UK on Thursday. This allows for some morning mist and fog patches, although these clearing. An increased southwesterly breeze in the west lifting the fog into lower cloud, although this breaking to allow for some bright or sunny spells to develop. Variable cloud across more central and eastern parts of the UK but some bright spells coming through. Thicker cloud brings rain into western Scotland and the far west of Ireland later as the wind increases here. Some evening fog may form in the eastern Midlands and southeast England. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Friday
A front passes eastwards through Friday. This brings showery, sometimes heavy bursts of rain with it, and it may not clear from East Anglia, central and southern England and Wales until the evening. Drier, milder weather follows into Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland with some bright spells and broken cloud here. Southern Ireland tending to remain rather cloudy. After being breezy at first the winds should faal light later. Highs at 5C in southeast England in the rain, 12C in Ireland and western Scotland.
